If you’re like the rest of the world, it may have been a while since you last did eye makeup. With so many tips to consider when using – and even removing – your mascara, the below mascara tips should be top considerations when doing your makeup routine.
Tip #1: Check the expiry date
The expiry date of your makeup impacts its application and overall look. When the shelf life of your mascara runs out, the formula may become clumpy and dry, and – in extreme cases – can cause an eye infection and redness, especially if you have sensitive skin. It’s recommended that you replace your mascara every six months. Did you know our mascara products have a squeezy tube? This helps save on waste and make sure you get the best value for money.
It’s also recommended that you clean the wand of the mascara to prevent build-up and clumping. Need mascara recommendations? Below are some of our bestsellers.
Tip #2: Choosing the correct wand for your lashes
There is no one fits all rule when it comes to mascara. We can all agree we use mascara for different reasons: to lift lashes, achieve volume or definition. Enhancing your lashes is more than just having a perfect application technique – you also need to find the ideal wand for your eyelash type. For example, if you have straight lashes, we recommend our curl-inducing Lash Alert Mascara. The curve in the wand gives your lashes an immediate curl and lift. If you have sparse lashes, you should use an hourglass-shaped wand, like our Rock Out & Lash Out Mascara to achieve a full lash coating.
No matter your lash type, the perfect brush will enhance your eyelashes and add to your ideal application.
Tip #3: Use an eyelash curler
To achieve the longest lashes, curl before applying your mascara. Your eyelashes are delicate, so you should only curl your eyelashes once and for 10 seconds maximum. Never curl your lashes after you have applied mascara, as once your it has dried, it makes your eyelashes vulnerable to breakage. You will still achieve the full-lash effect by following the above rule without over-curling to avoid damage.
Tip #4: Bottom to top
Mascara application seems pretty straightforward, but there’s a trick to make your lashes look fuller. When applying your mascara to lower lashes, go from the root of the lash to the tip. Hold the brush vertically to the base of your lashes and wiggle to coat every eyelash – the skinnier the wand, the better the application.
Moving onto the top lashes, hold the wand horizontally and as close to the root as possible. Gently use a side-to-side motion to create volume and thicker and fuller lashes.
Tip #5: Gently remove your mascara
Taking off your makeup is an essential part of your daily routine and there are four key steps to remove makeup effectively. There's no denying mascara is arguably the most challenging makeup to thoroughly remove, especially if it’s waterproof.
Tip: Most people rub their eyes too harshly.
